ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Federal Shariat Court has ruled against traditions and customs that deprive women of their rightful inheritance, declaring them un-Islamic.
In its landmark decision, the court directed authorities to take criminal action against individual who deny women their inheritance right.
The ruling was issued by a four-member bench, led by Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, on a petition filed by Fouzia Jalal Shah.
During the proceedings, the court was informed about the practice of ‘Chadar’ and ‘Parchi’ in Bannu, which allegedly prevent women from claiming their inheritance.
However, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government clarified that such customs were neither officially recognised nor held any legal standing.
The judgement highlighted that depriving women of inheritence was reminiscent of pre-Islamic times when such injustices were common.
