ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Acting President Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday signed the bill paving the way for the extension of tenure of services chiefs to five years.

Gilani signed the Army, Air Force and Navy acts amendment bills envisaging the five-year service tenures of their chiefs.

The acting president also signed the Practice and Procedure Bill. Besides, he gave assent to the bills providing for increase in the number of Supreme Court and Islamabad High Court judges.

Meanwhile, the Senate Secretariat also issued gazette notification of bills including the Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill 2024 and Army, Air Force and Navy acts amendment bills .

PARLIAMENT PASSES KEY BILLS

On Monday, the National Assembly and Senate passed the key bills including those envisaging increase in the number of Supreme Court and IHC judges, and extension to the tenure of services chiefs.

The Senate session was presided over by Irfan Siddiqui and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar moved the bills in the upper house.

Earlier, the bills were adopted by the National Assembly shortly after they were presented amid the opposition outcry.

The law minister also introduced the Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance.

He presented a bill to increase the number of Supreme Court judges to 34. He explained that additional judges were required for constitutional court and reducing the backlog of pending cases.

The House also made amendments to the ‘Islamabad High Court Act’ to increase the number of judges from nine to 12.

Later, the National Assembly also passed the bills to extend the tenure of the service chiefs. The amendments were made in the Pakistan Army Act 1952, Air Force Act and Pakistan Navy Act.

All the bills related to the tenure of services chiefs were moved by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif.
