LAHORE (Dunya News) - The 8th death anniversary of great humanitarian and philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi is being observed on Monday (today).
Abdul Sattar Edhi was born on Feb 28, 1928, in Gujarat (a city of India). He started welfare services in 1951.
Building an extensive network
He established world's largest volunteer ambulance network along with shelters for homeless people and animals, and orphanages across the country.
The 88-year-old philanthropist founded the country's biggest welfare organisation, the Edhi Foundation, with almost no money.
His work brought in a flood of donations that built the Edhi Foundation into a huge healthcare network of hospitals, orphanages, clinics and women's shelters.
A legacy of selflessness and global recognition
Edhi was known for his ascetic, humble lifestyle and is widely credited for having created more public benefits for the Pakistani people than a succession of elected leaders since the country was founded in 1947. He was often called Pakistan's "Angel of Mercy."
Many international and national awards, including Asian Nobel, the Lenin Peace Prize and Nishan-e-Imtiaz, were bestowed upon him in recognition of his services for humanity.
A nation mourns
He breathed his last on July 8, 2016 at the age of 88 in Karachi. The nation has paid glowing tributes to the services of Edhi for humanity.
