ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The National Assembly on Friday passed an amendment to the Elections Act, 2017 (The Elections Amendment Bill, 2024).

The bill was moved by Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Azam Nazeer Tarar.

Briefing the lawmakers, he said the amendment was aimed at expediting the settlement of petitions pertaining to elections of the National Assembly, the Senate, provincial assemblies, and local governments.

The ruling PML-N MNA Rana Aradat Sharif presented the report of the committee on the bill in the House, after which Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar moved that the relevant rules be suspended to bring the bill under consideration.

After the approval of the motion by the House, the minister proposed that the Election (Amendment) Bill 2024 be taken up for immediate consideration.

At the behest of the speaker, the law minister explained the aims and objectives of the bill and said, “the government has restored Article 140 of the Election Act to its original state regarding the election tribunals.”

JUI member Alia Kamran said that her party will review it and express its opinion while meanwhile, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub criticized the bill.
