Defamation Law: LHC seeks response from Punjab advocate general

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought response from Punjab advocate general by issuing notice for assistance on pleas against Punjab Defamation Law 2024.

The LHC’s Justice Amjad Rafiq heard the case against Punjab Defamation Law filed by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) secretary.

Petitioner’s counsel contended that law prohibited professional journalists to practice, during the hearing. Justice Amjad inquired from counsel, “Don’t you think such law must enact?’

Counsel Azhar Siddique replied that there was an already existing law, and this law wasn’t required. He added that this law also effected independent judiciary.

Justice Amjad remarked that this law could be improved. Justice highlighted that vloggers produce weird vlogs.

Counsel Abuzar Salman Niazi implied that this law wouldn’t control fake news instead curb fundamental rights.

Justice Amjad Raffique remarked that key concerns had been raised on these petitions.

Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari insisted that they were told that legislation would be done with their consultation but it didn’t happen. He stressed that a professional journalist disseminate news with responsibility.

Consequently, LHC has adjourned the case hearing until July 4 by issuing notice of assistance to Punjab advocate general.
