LAHORE (Dunya News) – The election of Punjab chief minister will take place today (Monday). Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) Maryam Nawaz and Sunni Ittehad Council's (SIC) Rana Aftab Khan are the two strong candidates in the race for the Punjab CM slot.

The election will likely see Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the daughter of three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, make history as the first woman chief minister of Punjab.

The nomination papers of Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Rana Aftab Khan for the post of Punjab chief minister have been accepted.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected Punjab chief minister will be held on Monday at 2pm at the Governor’s House.

The invitations in this regard have been distributed to the provincial assembly members. The MPAs have been instructed not to bring guests along with them.

On the other hand, PML-N leader Azma Bukhari while addressing the media on the premises of the Punjab Assembly expressed hope that Maryam Nawaz would assume the role of chief minister on Monday.

She emphasised that any disrespect towards a female chief minister would not be tolerated.

During the ongoing inaugural session of the Punjab Assembly, ruckus was witnessed on Saturday when legislators from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), which includes PTI-backed MPs, chanted slogans against PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif upon the arrival of chief minister-designate Maryam Nawaz in the House.

Azma expressed hope that there would be no misconduct and that opposition members would maintain peace. She also expressed hope that opponents of the PML-N would respect the mandate of the PML-N.
