Missing persons case: SC orders commission to provide details, clarifies scope of proceedings
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court has issued a directive to the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, instructing it to furnish details about missing persons to the attorney general for Pakistan (AGP) within ten days.
The court has specified that upon receiving the commission's report, the final report should be promptly submitted to the court.
The court has stated that the hearing of the missing persons case will proceed only after the requested documents are gathered.
Addressing objections raised by the Registrar's Office concerning senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan's request, the court has clarified that proceedings in response to Ahsan's request will be confined to missing persons only.
Furthermore, the apex court has underscored its commitment to excluding cases involving political affiliations or those who have voluntarily returned.
Established in 2011 under the leadership of retired Justice Javed Iqbal, the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances has encountered a lack of confidence from Amina Masood Janjua and other parties, a sentiment acknowledged by the court in its order.
The court has noted that the commission’s registrar, Khalid Naseem, reported that many missing persons had been successfully recovered through the commission's efforts.
The order specifies that lawyer Faisal Siddiqui revealed several overlooked production orders of the commission. Faisal Siddiqui has been appointed as the assistant in the missing persons case by the court, the order adds.
