General elections 2023 likely to delay for months as EC needs more time
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The Council of Common Interests (CCI) on Saturday accorded approval to the first-ever Digital Population and Housing Census 2023.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was held to discuss the political scenario amid disagreements among coalition partners. As a result of this decision, it is expected that the general elections may be postponed by a few months, as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will need time to carry out the delimitation exercise again.
The meeting was attended by the chief ministers of all four provinces, as well as federal ministers. Its purpose was to determine whether the upcoming elections should be based on the 2017 census or the latest one conducted this year.
During the meeting, the results of the new census were also presented.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that he would dissolve the National Assembly on Aug 9, three days before its scheduled term ends. This announcement followed a meeting with the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and other coalition partners.
Sources say the participants in the meeting, which was held via video link, expressed their confidence in the prime minister to finalise a name for the caretaker prime minister's role.
