Peshawar's heritage trail project worth Rs500 million turns to debris, dirt
Pakistan
Lack of maintenance led to deterioration
PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – The heritage trail project in Peshawar, built at a cost of Rs500 million, has fallen into disrepair due to neglect.
The project was aimed at restoring historical places and attracting tourists to the provincial capital.
The project was constructed by the former provincial government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) between the historic Ghanta Ghar (clock tower) and Tehsil Gur Ghatri four years ago.
The first phase of the Heritage Trail project was allocated Rs310 million, but the completion of the project exceeded Rs500 million.
It included benches for sitting, beautifully designed street lights, streets made of wood, decoration of old houses and shops, and a food street along with the gates.
However, after four years, no arrangement has been made for the maintenance of the heritage trail, leading to its deterioration.
There are piles of dirt in some places, and everything is in a state of disrepair.
Local people have expressed disappointment at the project's condition, saying that it was a good plan by the government, but it didn't achieve its aim.
The lack of attention to the project's maintenance has led to a waste of public funds, and tourists are unlikely to be attracted to a heritage trail that has fallen into disrepair.
The authorities are being urged to take immediate action to restore the heritage trail and ensure that it is properly maintained to fulfill its original purpose.
