Overspeeding vehicle bumped into Mufti Abdul Shakoor's car: police report

The religious affairs minister died in a horrific road accident om Saturday night

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – An over-speeding vehicle crashed into the car of federal religious affairs minister Mufti Abdul Shakoor who died afterwards on late Saturday, a preliminary report compiled by the Islamabad police revealed on Sunday. 

The vehicle that crashed into the JUI-F leader's car was going over the speed limit, the report established.

According to the police statement, the minister was driving the car himself when a Toyota Hilux Revo with five people onboard smashed his vehicle at the driver's side.

Meanwhile, the body of federal minister for religious affairs Mufti Abdul Shakoor, who died in a road accident on Saturday, was transported to his native town in Laki Marwat where his second funeral was offered before burial. The Islamabad police took five suspects, who were riding in another vehicle, into custody.

Led by Maulana Fazalur Rehman, the funeral prayer of Mufti was offered late in the night in the federal capital. 

The capital police said the JUI-F MNA Shakoor’s car was hit by a Hilux Revo, leased by a private bank and carrying five passengers, when he was on his way to the Secretariat Chowk from Marriott Hotel. He was shifted to the Polyclinic Hospital but he could not be resuscitated to life, the police added.

Upon reports, rescue teams and the police reached the spot. The rescue teams provided first aid to the injured and the police launched an investigation into the incident. The police reported that the car and passengers were taken into custody.

Fazalur Rehman while leading the funeral prayers said the loss of Mufti Abdul Shakoor is mountainous for his party and himself as well. The funeral prayer offered at Darussalam mosque in sector G6-2 at 12.30am was attended by PPP's Yousaf Raza Gillani, PML-N's Tariq Fazal Chaudhary and other eminent leaders. 

The JUI chief while expressing grief over the death of Mufti Abdul Shakoor said he was a very active person and rose voice about the problems of peace and tranquility in his area just yesterday.

A case was lodged with the Secretariat Islamabad police station on the complaint of JUI leader Haji Qudrat Ullah. According to the complainant, Maulana came to his house before Iftar and at 8:22pm he left for the Parliament Lodges. Later, the complainant was informed by cook, who received a call from Mufti's driver about the incident at 10pm.

Mufti Abdul Shakoor was driving his own official vehicle when he was hit by a pick up being driven negligently and recklessly at high speed. He died on the spot. 

Condolences

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his condolences on the sad demise saying "he was saddened to hear about the sudden death of a member of his cabinet".

President Dr Arif Alvi took to Twitter to share his sorrow on his death. He also praised his efforts for interfaith harmony.

PTI senior vice president Fawad Chaudhry prayed for the departed soul.

Minister for external affairs Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and former president Asif Ali Zardari expressed their sad thoughts on his demise.
