ECP convenes emergency meeting to deliberate over Saturday's LG elections in capital

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday convened an emergency meeting to deliberate over the matter of holding local government (LG) election in the federal capital on Dec 31.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) had ordered the ECP to conduct the LG election on Saturday (Dec 31). The additional attorney general started drafting intra-court appeal [reveiw petition] against the IHC’s order.

Sources said more than 14,000 members of the polling staff were teachers and employees of other departments and they were on winter vacation, hence making it difficult for the ECP to conduct the election.

The LG polls in the capital city were scheduled to be held on Dec 31 but the ECP postponed these due to government’s decision of increasing the number of union councils (UCs) in the city. It pointed out that untimely amendments made by the governments in the laws created impediments in the path of LG polls, adding that the ECP had announced schedule for the polls in Islamabad but it was declared null and void by the high court.
