Faisal Vawda submits resignation to Senate chairman
KARACHI (Dunya News) – Former PTI leader Faisal Vawda on Wednesday submitted his resignation as senator to Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani in line the Supreme Court’s order.
Mr Vawad, who was ousted from the PTI in October last over controversial remarks against the party’s long march, announced the development on Twitter, stating: “This seat belongs to Imran Khan”.
The Karachi-based politician said he was resigning from the post morally and in line with the orders of the apex court.
Mr Vawda also thanked Imran Khan and all fellow senators, adding that he would continue his political struggle.
The resignation comes weeks after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) reinstated him, making him eligible to tender his resignation as senator in line with the top court s order.
Earlier, the Supreme Court revoked Mr Vawda’s lifetime disqualification in a dual national case, converting it into one-time disqualification.
Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial in the judgement stated: “Faisal Vawda stated that he received the certificate of quitting US nationality on June 25, 2018. He further admitted his misleading statement. He was not qualified to become the member parliamentarian in 2018.”
“The Article 63 of the Constitution of Pakistan applies after Vawda admitted his guilt. He will remain disqualified till the tenure of the incumbent parliament,” the order read.
The top court also ruled that the ECP was not authorized to disqualify any parliamentarian before the elections. “The Islamabad High Court’s decision couldn’t be maintained in the light of the law of the land so the decision of the ECP and IHC regarding lifetime disqualification is declared null and void.”
In a latest development, the resignation of Faisal Vawda was accepted by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and his seat was announce vacant by the Senate Secretariat.
Mr Vawda, who became Senator from Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf in 2018, left his senate seat in light of supreme court verdict.
