Pervaiz Elahi terms PA session at Aiwan-i-Iqbal 'unconstitutional'

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) leader and Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Sunday the Deputy Speaker could not preside over the assembly session in the presence of the Speaker and the proceedings in Aiwan-i-Iqbal were unconstitutional.

During the meeting with former Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Pervaiz Elahi said that Punjab Governor Balighur Rahman did sever constitutional violation by issuing the ordinance to convene the budget session outside the Punjab Assembly.

"Those who were chanting slogans to ‘respect the vote’ had damaged the democratic institution," Elahi said.

The PA speaker further said that under Rule 3 and 4 of the Rules of Procedure of the Punjab Assembly 1997, the Secretary Punjab Assembly has to issue orders to convene and adjourn the meeting while no other person has the right to adjourn the session. The budget session chaired by the Deputy Speaker was unconstitutional, he added.
