Govt considers getting finance minister Shaukat Tarin elected as senator
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The federal government has started considering getting Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin elected as senator.
According to sources, preparations are underway to get Shaukat Tarin elected as senator from Punjab or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to Article 91 of the Constitution, any unelected person must become a Senator or a member of the National Assembly to remain in the Cabinet after six months.
It may be recalled that before Shaukat Tarin, Asad Umar, Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh and Hammad Azhar had served as Finance Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Shaukat Tarin has served as Finance Minister before in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani from 2008 to 2010.
Shaukat Tarin had earlier served as an adviser to Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, after which he was appointed Finance Minister in 2009 after being elected a senator from Sindh.
