Dissolution of local bodies depts in Punjab unconstitutional, CEC tells SC
The concerned authorities are committing contempt of court by not arranging the polls: SC
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja on Thursday has appeared before Supreme Court (SC) in local bodies election case.
During the hearing, the CEC told that the dissolution of local bodies departments in Punjab was an unconstitutional move over which Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked about the action against the provincial authorities.
The Punjab government has formed new local bodies law, Sikandar Sultan Raja responded.
The apex court also summoned CEC and Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan.
Justice Qazi Faez Isa, while raising question over delay in holding local bodies election, remarked that the people of Pakistan are being deprived of this democratic right. The concerned institutions are committing contempt of court by not arranging the polls, he stated.
The judge further asked about the whereabouts of attorney general and said if he is accompanying the prime minister then he should better know that the Constitution is important than anything else.
LB polls in KP to be held on Sept 15: CM Mahmood Khan
Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan announced Local Bodies elections in the province on September 15 this year which has been endorsed by the provincial cabinet.
He said that the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is committed to the decentralization of power and authority and decision making at grassroots level in the province.
He directed all the provincial departments to ensure implementation of the laws framed by the provincial government in their letter & spirit.
Punjab hints at completing groundwork concerning local body elections before Sept
Punjab government had apprised the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) about the progress concerning local body elections and hinted at completing groundwork before September.
Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat appeared before the ECP as Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar’s representative and recorded statement on behalf of the provincial regime.
Raja Basharat told the ECP that the number of village councils in the province has reduced to 8,000 from 25,000 and the elections would be held phase-wise.
