Money laundering worth billions of rupees done in past: Chairman NAB
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal has said that money laundering not just a single penny but billions of rupees was done in the past.
He said that money laundering of billions of rupees caused poverty, misery, lack of health and education facilities in the country.
In the Madaraba case, naive and innocent people were robbed in the name of Islamic investment. By giving people greed for huge Shariah profits, their life savings were looted.
Chairman NAB said that Madaraba cases were the biggest robberies in the history of the country. Mufti Ehsan and his accomplices were sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined Rs10 billion.
He said that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the meeting of the Constituent Assembly termed bribery and nepotism as a major issue. Corruption is the root of all evils.
Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal said that there is a difference between white collar crimes and street crimes.
The NAB is the focal organization under the UN Convention against Corruption. NAB is also the chairman of the SAARC Anti-Corruption Forum, he added.
NAB is a role model for SAARC countries. The World Economic Forum, Transparency International Pakistan, PILDAT and Mashal Pakistan have praised the NAB s efforts to eradicate corruption.
He said that NAB has deposited Rs714 billion in the national exchequer since its inception which is a significant achievement of NAB.
