Failure to hold local body elections our biggest political mistake: Fawad Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhry has stressed the need for devolution of powers saying that no Chief Minister is ready to pass on powers to the districts. He said that former President Pervez Musharraf’s system of local government was successful.

Fawad Chaudhry, while talking to Dunya News program "Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Saath", said that provinces are an obstacle in the implementation of Provincial Finance Commission, even PTI chief ministers are not following the federal cabinet’s directives.

"We all want equal rights for all areas, but all this will happen when provincial finance commission is implemented," he said. There should be a fair distribution of Pakistan’s resources and a committee has been formed on the issue, he added.

The Federal Minister for Science and Technology said that provincial governments must fulfill their responsibilities and pass on their powers, these matters should not be left up to the courts.

Answering a question, he said that our biggest political mistake is not holding local body elections, something which should’ve been done in the very first year.

Fawad Chaudhry said that Article 140-A mandates the provinces to devolve power to the districts. The Chief Minister has too much power, which can only be transferred to lower levels through local government system.
