Senate approves three month paternity, six month maternity leave

After Senate's approval, the bill will now be tabled in the National Assembly

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Government opposed the bill which sought six and three months’ maternity and paternity leaves respectively.

According to details, Senate session with Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani in the chair passed the bill despite government’s opposition.

Bill tabled by Pakistan People Party Senator Anny Mari proposed that the mother should be given six months and father three months’ leave at the birth of a child. If employers do not give leave to the employees, action should be taken against them.

Speaking in the Senate, Senator Anny Mari said that women are not given maternity leave in government institutions.

Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar opposed the bill and said that male government employees are already given 48 days leave and female civil servants get three months maternity leave.

After Senate’s approval, the bill will now be tabled in the National Assembly.

The Senate session unanimously approved Senator Mushtaq Ahmed’s resolution against the disgrace of the Quran in Norway.

The resolution asks government to call Norwegian Ambassador to record protest and Pakistan’s ambassador should play a role in helping the muslims arrested in Norway. Diplomatic channels should be used to prevent such incidents.

Senate also passed Khushbakht Shujaat’s resolution to add biography of all the recipients of Nishan-e-Haider in the curriculum.

Senate approved a resolution to take immediate steps to construct more interchanges on Multan-Sukkur motorway.

Senator Mirza Mohammad Afridi presented a tribute resolution on the birth anniversary of the late poet Ahmad Faraz, which was unanimously passed.
