NEPRA calls for investigation in illegal profit of private power plants

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Friday called on to set up a commission to investigate illegal profits in private power plants of the country.

NEPRA has rejected the government’s claim that the power shortfall is over where NEPRA tariff said that there is a shortfall of three to three and a half thousand MW in the country.

At a meeting of the Senate subcommittee on Energy chaired by Nauman Wazir Khattak, NEPRA tariff Saif Ullah Chattha proposed that the independent power producers (IPPs) should set up a commission to investigate profits, capacity payments and dollar profits.

He said that the commission’s proposal has been forwarded to the Ministry of Energy, which states that the proposed commission should incorporate representatives of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), legal and engineering consultants, National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Finance Ministry, Ministry of Law, Ministry of Energy and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

NEPRA tariff told the committee that the recently constituted loan inquiry commission by the Prime Minister had briefed the IPPs on capital payments on Monday. NEPRA asserted that the installed capacity of the power is 35,000 MW and the power demand is 23,000 MW.

Senator Nauman Wazir said that there is no shortage of electricity in the country if the feeders who steal electricity are removed. The committee also expressed dissatisfaction at the NEPRA officials for not submitting the paper work.
