Police transgressing law using handcuffs for bribes

Dunya News

Convicts revealed that those who bribe the officers with Rs 200-500 they are not bound in chains

(Web Desk) – Handcuffs are normally used by law enforcement agencies while transporting law offenders from their jail cells to the respective courts for their hearings.

Law also holds police officers accountable while using the handcuffs, as a means to prevent an attempt by the prisoner to escape from the courts but at the same time not to hurt the convict.

According to a senior lawyer, the law is quite clear in defining the do’s and don’ts of what is allowed and what falls under abuse.

‘The reason for handcuffing the convict is to keep him in custody and prevent him from fleeing. But the officer needs to keep in mind that his handcuffs shouldn’t be used as a means of torture. Handcuffing both of his hands is considered a crime under the ambit of law,’ he added.

But once you visit Karachi city courts one can clearly witness the abuse of law by the on duty officer who uses the handcuffs as a means to gather bribes from the jailbirds.

Some convicts can be seen roaming around without any handcuff but those who aren’t able to pay upfront they are so tightly bound that it causes harm to the prisoner evident from the bruises on their wrists.

Some can be seen with cuts, grazing’s or indentation lines formed by the wound up chains.

Convicts revealed that those who bribe the officers with Rs 200-500 they are not bound in chains while others who have nothing to offer suffer this affliction at the hands of police.
