KHANPUR (Dunya News) – Police took action on Monday by arresting four persons involved in the alleged abduction and forced conversions to Islam of two young Hindu sisters — Reena and Raveena — from their home in Daharki on the occasion of Holi last Wednesday.

Police have arrested father, brother of the Nikah Registrar (officiator of the marriage) and two witnesses of the alleged forced marriage of the Hindu girls during raids in Khanpur. Ages of the girls are around 14-16 years.

The action came following notice of the matter by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who had also ordered an investigation.

Sindh Transport Minister Awais Qadir Shah met family members of the girls and assured them that the girls would soon be recovered.

Another case has also been lodged against one of the two witnesses namely Jawad Hassan in mobile phone stealing at City Khanpur police station.

Child Marriage Restraint Act, that the Sindh Assembly had passed in 2014 according to which the minimum age of marriage is 18 years and making a person younger than that age marry is a punishable offence.

Videos of Reena and Raveena’s “Nikah” went viral on the social media, in which a cleric was purportedly shown soleminising the Nikah (marriage) of the two girls, triggering a nationwide outrage. They were also shown embracing Islam at around 16 and 14 years of age, however, they seemed too young to be married.
