ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Luxembourgian Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn on Thursday admired Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan for his efforts in defusing tensions with India in the aftermath of the Pulwama incident and releasing captured Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman as a peace gesture.

During a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, FM Jean Asselborn said, “no one wants war between Pakistan and India” and offered to play a constructive role as mediator for peace between the arch rivals.

“Luxembourg has concerns over escalating tensions between the neighbouring countries,” he said, adding that it wants stability and peace in the region.

The minister also praised Pakistan’s role in the ongoing Afghan peace talks while FM Qureshi expressed his gratitude to him for paying his first visit to Pakistan.

He further stressed, "The European Union is playing its role in deescalating tensions between Pakistan and India. But our mediation potential is not strong enough to resolve the Kashmir issue.”

Meanwhile, Qureshi asserted that the European Union (EU) is Pakistan’s key economic partner.

Qureshi told the media that a wide range of bilateral and regional issues were discussed during the meeting with his Luxembourg counterpart.

The matter of summit-level talks between Pakistan and the European Union was discussed, as well as steps being taken to reduce tensions with India, he said.

Earlier today, Foreign Minister Asselborn called on Qureshi at the Foreign Office in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal tweeted.

Both the leaders discussed issues pertaining to regional peace and security situation, and agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in multiple spheres.
