5 more minors die of malnutrition in Tharparkar

At least 55 more malnutritioned children are still under treatment at Civil Hospital in Mithi.

THARPARKAR (Dunya News) – Five more infants aged between four days to 18 months have succumbed to malnutrition in the Civil Hospital in Mithi on Monday, Dunya News reported.

According to sources, the death of these children has raised the death toll to 35 for this month and 101 for this year in Tharparkar. Sources further informed that 55 more malnutritioned children are still under treatment at Civil Hospital in Mithi.

Lack of government response, lack of health care facilities and scarcity of water are amongst the major reasons for the deaths minors in Tharparkar.
Life is tough for people living in Tharparkar. Extreme heat in summer, scarcity of food, unsafe and saline drinking water and lack of access to basic health facilities have had an adverse effect on the life and wellbeing of communities.

Pakistan is among countries with the highest infant mortality rates. Among these countries, eight are in Africa and two in Asia, including Afghanistan which is ranked third.

According to a United Nation Children Fund’s report, Pakistan is the riskiest place to be born as measured by its newborn mortality rate. “A baby born in Pakistan is almost 50 times more likely to die during his or her first month than a baby born in Japan, Iceland and Singapore,” the report stated.
