NAB arrests former KPT manager over illegal recruitments

KARACHI (Dunya News) – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday arrested the former manager of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Mehmood Sharif from the Karachi registry of Supreme Court (SC) in a case pertaining to corruption of Rs2.8 billion through illegal job regularisations in the trust.

Sharif was detained after the court rejected his bail plea. He will be produced before an accountability court for physical remand.

Details suggest that the suspect committed corruption through illegal regularisation of 940 employees of the KPT with the assistance of then federal minister for ports and shipping Babar Ghauri, then KPT chairmen Javed Hanif and Rauf Akhtar Farooqui, Mohammad Iqbal, Mohammad Saparas, Ameer Ali Brohi and another.

The illegal recruitments caused losses to the tune of Rs2.8bn to the national exchequer.

Farooqui has already been remanded in judicial custody till Jan 21 by an accountability court.

NAB had also filed a reference against all the eight persons while six of them have been indicted.
