Al-Azizia reference: Nawaz Sharif to begin recording statement from tomorrow
Later, the court adjourned hearing till Wednesday.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif will begin recording his statement in Al-Azizia reference from Wednesday Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code whereas accountability court will pen a letter to Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) seeking extension in deadline for concluding the trial of graft reference.
Honb’le Judge Arshad Malik remarked that accountability court would inform apex court about the progress in remaining two corruption references against the Sharif family.
As the hearing went underway, defence lawyer Khawaja Haris cross-examined investigation officer. The investigation officer Muhammad Kamran told court that call up notices had not been served to Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz [sons of Nawaz Sharif] on their foreign address. “Through the report of joint investigation team, I came to know that Hassan and Hussain Nawaz were non-residential citizens of Pakistan”, added the investigation officer.
The investigation officer further informed the court that he had prepared call up notices and to implement them, another officer Umar Daraz Shamim went to Jati Umra’s residence of Sharif. “The summons had not been implemented under personal capacity as security officer of the residence barred officials from doing so”, he added.
Later, the court adjourned hearing till Wednesday.
It is worth mentioning here that the cases against Nawaz family stemmed from the Panama Papers leak that disclosed expensive and undeclared property allegedly owned by them in London.
Former PM Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain Safdar were convicted and sentenced to prison for ten years, seven years and one year respectively in Avenfield verdict.
However, the convictions were suspended by Islamabad High Court and they were released from Adiala jail till final decision.
