Begum Kulsoom's funeral prayers being offered at Sharif Medical City

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The funeral prayers of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, wife former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim league-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, has been offered at Sharif Medical City, Raiwind near Lahore.

Religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil lead the funeral prayers.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar along with a huge number of PML-N leaders and supporters attended the event. Delegations from other political parties including the PPP, the MQM-P and PSP have also attended the funeral.

A large number of people including party workers are visitng the residence of Nawaz to offer their condolences.

Following the former first lady’s funeral prayer, she will be laid to rest beside the grave of her father-in-law Mian Sharif at Jati Umra.

On Tuesday, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz had passed away at London’s Harley Street Clinic after a prolonged battle with cancer. 

A PIA flight carrying the casket had landed at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore at 6:40am today (Friday) from where it was shifted to Sharif Medical Comlex, Jati Umra amid strict security.

At least 13 family members including PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, Zakariya Hussain Sharif, Asma Dar, Haleema Dar,Usman Dar, Asif
Baig Mirza, Khadija Mirza, Saira Saleh, Ijaz Gull, Samia Tariq, Nargis Butt returned on the same flight.

Kulsoom’s nephews Hamza Shehbaz, Salman Shehbaz, Yousaf Abbas, Aziz Abbas and Ata Tarar were present at the airport to receive the coffin.

A special immigration counter was set up at the Hajj Terminal of the airport in order to facilitate the early clearance of all those who arrived with her body.

Nawaz oversees arrangements for Kulsoom’s funeral in Lahore


Earlier, Nawaz Sharif had reviewed arrangements for Kulsoom Nawaz’s funeral in Lahore. The ousted premier paid visit to Sharif Medical City to oversee and finalize the arrangements for his late wife’s last rites.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan telephoned Nawaz and offered condolences over the demise of her wife.


Security plan finalized


The police had formulated the security plan according to which nine vehicles of elite force will patrol in various areas. Eight walk-through gates had also been installed at two points.

Moreover, security personnel had been deployed at 19 places. They include three superintendents of police (SP), three deputy superintendents of police (DSP) and six station house officers (SHO).


London funeral


On Thursday, hundreds of people including members of the Sharif family attended the funeral of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz at London’s Regent Park mosque.

Family members and prominent political figures including Hussain Nawaz, Hassan Nawaz, former Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif, former finance minister Ishaq Dar and Ch Nisar attended the last rituals of former first lady.


Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar’s parole extended


The Punjab government had extended the parole period of Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar to participate in the last rites of Sharif’s wife. The trio will now remain on parole until September 17, 4pm.

A notification had also been issued in this regard.
