No compromise on national issues, says chief justice

Summary Chief Justice of Pakistan questions transparency of Islamabad and Peshawar safe-city project.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that no compromise will be made on the transparency of Islamabad, Peshawar safe-city project as this is a national issue.A two-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by the chief justice, heard the case of awarding the contract of Islamabad, Peshawar safe-city project to a China based company.The chief justice, showing concern over the matter, inquired about the transparency of the project. Replying to a question, the petitioner, Shahid Orakzai, submitted that this project would cost US$ 124.7 million and it was not awarded in a transparent manner.The counsel for the Interior Ministry told the court that a loan was being taken from China to complete the project. The chief justice remarked that the nation should not be burdened with loans.The Planning Division deputy chairman told the court that the project was in the finishing stages. The court said that the former Planning Division deputy chairman had also questioned the tranparency of this project . The court adjourned the hearing for four weeks.
