Karachi's 'Chamra' hospital offering free dermatological care

(Dunya News) – Skin diseases are becoming very common among residents of Karachi with pollution and weather contributing to the spread of such infections.

One of the most common and dangerous types of skin infections seen in residents of Karachi is fungal infection. Fungal infection can cause serious damage to the skin resulting in red itchy patches and making nails brittle.

The onset of fungal infections needs immediate attention from a dermatologist.

According to skin specialists, fungal infections occur due to the hot and humid weather – typical of Karachi, which is also a perfect medium for fungus to grow rapidly.

It can spread from person to person through usage of common household items such as towels and clothes of the infected person.

The other major factor of skin diseases and infections is pollution.

Many suffering from skin diseases in Karachi visit one of the famous hospitals of Karachi catering to such patients. Located at Regal Chowk, the Sindh Institute of Skin Diseases, known as Skin Hospital or ‘Chamra’ Hospital, has a large number of patients visiting for their skin related issues.

More than 3,000 to 5,000 people visit this hospital on a daily basis.

Speaking to Dunya News, Director of Chamra Hospital, Doctor Iqbal Soomro says over five thousand patients visit the hospital especially during the summers.

“We first carefully diagnose the patient’s skin infection or condition and then we provide them with necessary treatments and if necessary they are admitted in the hospital.”

Governed by the Sindh province, Chamra hospital provides 50 beds for patients. They also provide their own specially prepared ointments and medicines, free of cost. The hospital also has its own laboratory.
