On Tuesday, a case was registered against Punjab University students who ransacked a festival that was being organised by the Islami Jamiat Talaba on Monday and torched the Electrical Engineering Department. The Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) gathered outside the VC office on Monday and staged a protest. Clashes broke out when students pelted stones and resorted to violence resulting in police being called in to control the situation.
“Two students groups are in a dispute with each other for the past two years. From today, operation clean up will begin in the university. In the short-term plan, cases will be registered against the students after evicting them from the university,” said Dr Zakria Zakir, PU’s acting vice-chancellor was reported as saying following Monday’s clashes.
While classes resumed the following morning, clashes between students were reported once again on Tuesday evening.
The Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif had taken notice of the incident and had directed a probe into the incident. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has also urged the university administration to take strict action against all those involved.
