(Dunya News) – The case which had gripped the entire nation seems to be finally coming to a close as the culprit behind the murder of 7-year-old Zainab has been arrested.
The horrifying case which had caused an uproar across the country had initiated a much-needed debate on child abuse in a country where there is reluctance to speak on the subject.
Thousands of people across the country staged protests demanding that justice be served and that the government take immediate steps to ensure children are protected. Besides the civil society, debate on social media further pressured politicians and government functionaries to address the issue of child abuse.
Here’s a look at the events that took place over the past two weeks leading to arrest of the suspects so far identified as Imran.
Zainab resident of Kasur was abducted on January 4 following which the girl’s dead body was discovered in garbage dump near her home.
People took to the streets and protested against the death of the young girl. The issue was raised on the social media with a hashtag of ‘Justice for Zainab’ with people raising their voices demanding justice for the young girl’s death.
After the body was discovered, police actively began their investigation. District Police Officer (DPO) Kasur Zulfiqar Ahmad was given the responsibility to track down the culprit.
Chief Minister of Punjab, Shehbaz Sharif visited the house of Zainab and assured the parents of the deceased that justice would be served.
Many other prominent politicians of different parties also showed solidarity towards Zainab’s family.
More than 500 peoples’ DNA samples were collected, and a sketch of the murderer was released by police.
Countless CCTV footages of the surrounding areas were monitored and eventually released where the 7-year-old girl is seeing walking with the murderer.

Supreme Court’s Chief Justice personally took notice of Zainab’s case and ordered police chief to arrest the murderer within 72 hours.
