ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the removal of PPP leader Dr Asim Hussain’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL), permitting him to travel abroad for medical treatment.
A two-member SC bench headed by Justice Mushir Aalim conducted hearing of the case. Dr Asim’s lawyer told court that their orders pertaining to removal of his client’s name from ECL was not implemented.
The government lawyer argued that Dr Asim’s name was included in ECL over the recommendation of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as the federal government does not act in the matter by itself.
Responding in the case, Justice Qazi Faiz Esa questioned that why the law has not been set equal for all the people?
“Many people accused of serious crimes are sitting abroad and carrying out their activities. Have any steps been taken for the return of those suspects?” he asked.
He said that the federal government should set a criterion for the inclusion of names in ECL as the unlawful application of law sets a bad precedent.
The court while allowing Dr Asim to travel abroad directed him to take permission from accountability court in the matter next time.
Dr Asim Hussain, a close aide of former president Asif Zardari, is facing corruption references and had been imprisoned for allegedly treating and harbouring terrorists at his hospital.
