Karachi's poor sewage system makes low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding

KARACHI (Dunya News) - The Sindh government has yet not taken any safety measures prior to the approaching rain spell in Karachi.
The neglect has put the low-lying areas in the city at risk of flooding as the sewage system remains devastated and nullahs heaped with garbage.
Nothing particular has been done to address the existing problems such as poor drainage system, lack of overflow of sewage and non-disposal of solid waste.
The situation is once again exposing the paucity in the administration’s physical readiness to handle major weather events.
On the contrary, Karachi’s Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Vohra has blamed Sindh government, industrial organizations and public for the deplorable conditions in the sprawling metropolis.
“Garbage and industrial waste is being continuously thrown in the nullahs. This problem will remain forever if the people do not stop this practice. The sewage cleaning could not be accomplished due to shortage of funds however; rain emergency centre and complaint staff will be formed to tackle the drainage issues,” he said.
