Legal and constitutional experts believe Nawaz Sharif’s address at lawyers convention on August 25 was contempt of court.
Talking to Daily Dunya, Justice (retd) Nasira Javed Iqbal called ex-PM’s speech contempt of court, adding that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) is also responsible for the act as they allowed broadcasting of such speech despite court ruling.
“One man is damaging democracy for his own sake while legislation and administration lie in his reach … He is gathering public support by making judiciary controversial,” she said while highlighting the role of media to save the nation.
Justice (retd) Akram Qureshi argued that sacked premier shouldn’t have held that speech as it lies in the category of contempt of court.
“One can express opinion on court ruling, but not call it incorrect,” he said. Judicial Activism Panel Chairman Azhar Sadeeq stated that Nawaz Sharif’s committed contempt of court by his speech.
He recalled that LHC order had barred broadcasting of such speeches which was not taken into consideration. Renowned legal expert Asma Jahangir said she doesn’t accept such a verdict while the court rulings are criticised all over the whole world.Expression of disapproval of court ruling by Nawaz Sharif is also doesn’t qualify his arrest, she said.
Experts of the constitution said that all books related to law should be closed if criticism on court ruling is not allowed.
