Twitter comes down hard on Maryam Nawaz as she appears before JIT

Dunya News

Two hashtags against Maryam Nawaz are among the top trends on Twitter today.

(Web Desk) – As Maryam Nawaz Sharif appears before the Joint Investigation Team conducting the investigation into the money laundering allegations on the Sharif family, there is an ongoing debate about the appearance of the prime minister’s daughter in front of the JIT.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supporters are of the view that it is wrong on part of the JIT to call Maryam Nawaz for the questioning, adding that the female members of the Sharif family were being  dragged  into the investigations, hinting that the summon by the JIT was unfair.

Members of opposition parties have strongly responded to this narrative and criticised PML-N supporters for playing the ‘woman card’. Some like Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari and Sharmila Faruqi cited the case of Benazir Bhutto and how she had faced the courts.

PTI leader Shireen Mazari strongly criticized the ‘drama’ that was being created about Maryam’s appearance before the JIT and deemed this narrative ‘pathetic’.

PTI leader Asad Umar also criticised PML-N leaders for reinforcing this narrative.

Meanwhile, Twitter is currently witnessing severe criticism against Maryam Nawaz on the day of her appearance before the JIT. Among the top trends on the micro-blogging website, #DakuRaniHazirHo and #LiesOfPrincessMariam are the two hashtags trending in Pakistan today. These hashtags are filled with scathing tweets criticising the prime minister’s daughter.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s twitter handle deemed this moment ‘decisive’ in the country’s history.

Some users resorted to humour to criticise Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

People are also criticizing a female police official for saluting Maryam Nawaz as she stepped out of her vehicle.

Unlike her father, Maryam Nawaz did not seem to enoy the support her father did when he appeared before the JIT, when the hashtag #MainbhiNawazhoon was among the top trends on Twitter, with many people voicing their support for Nawaz Sharif through the hashtag.
