Senior lawyer Sharifuddin Pirzada passes away
Leading lawyer Sharifuddin Pirzada died in Karachi on Friday at age 94.
KARACHI (Dunya News) – Prominent lawyer and constitutional and legal expert Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada passed away after a brief illness in Karachi on Friday. He was 94.
He will be buried in Karachi today after his children return from the United States. The Sindh High Court suspended all legal proceedings after Pirzada s death.
Sharifuddin Pirzada was born in the city of Burhanpur, India on June 12, 1923. He graduated from the University of Bombay in 1945 and obtained his Barrister-at-Law degree from Lincoln’s Inn in the United Kingdom. He started his career as law professional in Bombay and after creation of Pakistan settled in Karachi.
He had once been secretary to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, employed in his service in the 1940s.
He served as attorney general for former president Yahya Khan and his predecessor Ayub Khan, Pakistan s first military ruler, whom he also served as foreign minister.
From 1985 to 1988, Pirzada also served as the secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Conference.
In 2014, he was the head of former president Pervez Musharraf s defence team as the military ruler faced treason charges relating to his imposition of a state of emergency in 2007.
