Burden of proof in Panama case falls on Sharif family: Aitzaz Ahsan

Summary Aitzaz says that Panama proceeding is a text-book case.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - In an exclusive interview with Dr. Moeed Pirzada, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has said that if the evidence is presented only by the lawyers and the opposition, then the Panama case will not come to the desired end of the opposition. He said that the burden of proof falls 120 percent on the Sharif family because they have repeatedly accepted ownership to the London properties.

Regarding the Panama proceeding, he said that it was a text-book case.

“This is a textbook corruption case. Whoever owns the properties has to prove the source that generated those properties. No such evidence has been presented apart from that Qatari Prince’s letter. If Raja Pervez Ashraf or Yousuf Raza Gilani had made such statements instead of Hussain Nawaz, they would’ve been removed from their positions. The Sharif brothers are the favorites of this system; no one is raising a voice against them. There is no movement on the Baqir Najfi report. Their own Finance Minister had testified against them. If that had been under influence, then National Accountability Bureau could at least have legitimized it,” said Aitzaz.

The barrister said that he was not in favor of Asif Zardari coming to the parliament.

“I personally feel that he should not come into the parliament; it will have a negative effect. Asif Zardari is an expert in getting the opposition’s vote of confidence; coalitions are his forte,” he pronounced.

Regarding Bilawal’s role he said that the PPP chairman’s position will be revealed in the days to come.

“Asif Zardari’s political career has spanned on decades, but Bilawal is going to hold a key position in the party and its politics because right now

Asif Zardari is supervising the devolution of the party. The PPP is adamant on its four demands. The intra party elections were announced last month on PPP’s founding day. On December 27, Bilawal Bhutto had repeatedly said that there will be a new phase of Pakistan People’s Party kicking off and a new movement will be in place,” he said.
