Summary
The governments decision to enhance the strength and scope of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of FIA, which is probing the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, is ostensibly aimed at including Senator Safdar Abbasi and Naheed Khan into the probe, Dunya News reported. The Interior Ministry had included DIG (Operations) Bani Amin and SP Karachi, Rao Iftikhar, in the JIT as its new members through a notification, the other day. Both the police officers are considered as confidants of Interior Minister Rehman Malik. It was mind-boggling for every person what was the necessity or logic to enhance JIT at a time when the already constituted JIT had submitted the challan of the case before the ATC.The sources in the FIA said that the JIT under the new Terms of Reference (ToR) would question the former SSP and security officer of Benazir Bhutto, Major (Retd) Imtiaz Hussain, Senator Safdar Abbasi and Begum Naheed Khan as all were present in the Benazirs vehicle at the time of her assassination in a gun and bomb attack. All these persons including Begum Naheed Khan were never probed by any JIT in connection with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Major Imtiaz is now posted as DIG in Quetta. Furthermore, the JIT would probe former SSP (Operations) Rawalpindi, Yaseen Farooq. He has already remained under investigations.
