Summary

Secretary Religious Affairs Agha Server Qazilbash on Saturday told the Public Account Committee that proposal to hand over hajj operation to private sector was under consideration, and after the approval the ministry will only supervise the operation. While PAC Chairman Riaz Pirzada presiding over the meeting reviewed the 1997-98 audit objections of Pakistan Railways, Pakistan Post and Religious Affairs. The secretary admitted before the committee that the ministry had no experience in Hajj affairs which created problems both for ministry and pilgrims. He also informed the committee that the ministry was planning to acquire buildings for pilgrims with the help of private sector. The corruption was also noticed in 1997 Hajj operations but the Ministry as well as govt did not take steps to end corruption.
