FBR seeks explanations from 158 citizens named in Bahamas leak

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal Board of Revenue on Tuesday has served notices to 158 citizens named in Bahamas leak including former senator belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami, Professor Khurshid among others.

Son of federal minister for health who served during former coup leader, Pervez Musharraf’s tenure and that of Altaf Khanani, a businessman who deals in currency exchange, are the two persons among 158 named that Federal Board of Revenue has sought replies from.

Sources privy to the board reported that the notices were served on instructions of Federal Minister for Finance, Ishaq Dar.

In the previous month, a leak of documents from a company in Bahamas revealed that 158 Pakistanis among other persons from around the world owned offshore companies. 

It is the second leak this year that has targeted Pakistanis and nationals of other countries over owning of shell companies that are largely seen as one of the means to evade tax and accumulate unaccounted-for wealth in foreign banks.

Before Bahamas leak, a Panama-based law firm, Mossack Fonseca was hit with a leak of documents that were published in a newspaper in April.

At least 400 Pakistanis were revealed by the paper to have owned offshore companies including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
