 Police torture case: CJ orders AG to revive FIRs

Summary

Supreme Court on Wednesday resumed hearing of suo motto notice of the police torture perpetrated upon lawyers at Aiwan-e-Adl in Lahore on Oct 1st. During the course of hearing, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry maintained that he would not scrap the FIR against the police officials who allegedly tortured the blackcoats. Advocate General Khawaja Haris told the SC that police department is under the control of none and added that of the 6 FIRs lodged against the cops, 4 have been suspended. On this, Justice Ramday remarked that the Police Order 2002 put the police department out of control. The CJ remarked, We would not go after any SHO and the IGP is responsible if the law is supreme. Justice Chaudhry observed that the court would act if the Advocate General and Attorney General are unable to do anything in this regard. The CJ also ordered the AG to revive the FIRs in this respect.
