KARACHI (Web Desk / Agencies) – A local court on Tuesday sentenced two accused to 14 years in prison in a case pertaining to possession of explosive material.

Naeem Cockroach and Farhan Tidda, said to be affiliated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), were arrested from Orangi Town in 2013 for carrying explosives and illicit weapon.

The trial was conducted inside the Karachi Central Jail Complex today.

After hearing the arguments, both accused were handed down 14-year term in the explosive material case. The convicts were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs10,000.

Karachi is Pakistan s largest and richest city, home to the central bank and stock exchange, a major port and some of the most violent areas of the country.

Many of its sprawling slums are split along ethnic lines, and political parties have been accused of backing armed groups that have carved the city into spheres of influence, a charge they deny.

A major military operation, launched in 2013, is credited with slashing Karachi s murder and kidnapping rates. But the clampdown has drawn protests from opposition politicians who say their party members have been targeted.
