Summary
President Asif Ali Zardari appointed economist Shahid Kardar as governor of the central bank, a spokesman for the office of President Asif Ali Zardari said. The official notification is expected today (September 9).Kardar, a former finance minister of central Punjab province during the early years of former president Pervez Musharraf, has a masters from the University of Oxford and is also a chartered accountant. The new governor is likely to focus to keep inflation in check with prices being pushed up by food shortages and disruption to transport caused by the country's worst-ever floods. It is pertinent to mention here that Kardar's predecessor, Salim Raza, resigned in June, citing government interference, paving the way for Yaseen Anwar, the State Bank of Pakistan deputy governor, to take over as as acting governor.
