LAHORE (Web Desk) – Third death anniversary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) late ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmed is being observed on Wednesday.
Ahmed was a democracy activist however he is widely known for his anti-US stance.
The late JI leader openly criticised United States (US) war on terror. He denounced US-led offensive against Taliban.
Ahmed remained in JI’s office as Amir from October 7 1987 to March 29 2009. He had also served as president of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal from October 2002 to February 2008.
Interestingly, the late activist remained a British subject but got Pakistan’s nationality after Indo-Pak separation in 1947. Besides a religious scholar, the cleric was a foreign policy commentator.
The former JI ameer’s wife, two sons, Asif Luqman Qazi and Anas Farhan Qazi and two daughters actively invest in the JI s cause.
It should be mentioned here that he was elected as ameer four times and chose to turn down when he was asked to shoulder responsibilities the fifth time.
The late JI chief was elected to sit in the Senate in 1986 for the first time for a six-year tenure. Ahmed was re-elected in 1992 but he resigned citing protest against corruption as reason. He had helped the Afghan Taliban to spread their word to the outside world and gain supporters in Pakistan.
Ahmed had led a successful long march against Benazir Bhutto’s allegedly corrupt government on July 20 1996. On November 4, President Leghari had toppled her government mainly because of alleged corruption.
The former JI ameer died in one of his son’s house in the federal capital on January 6 2003.
