Maulana Ashrafi, Maulana Sherani grab eachother's collars during CII meeting
The session has been postponed for an indefinite period of time
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Maulana Tahir Ashrafi and Chairman Council for Islamic Ideology (CII) Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani on Tuesday reached out for each other’s collars during a session.
Sources privy to the council said that a meeting was called to discuss various matters including sectarian issues.
Reportedly, Maulana Ashrafi opposed the idea of discussing right to vote for a particular sect. As soon as the argument got intense neither of the two could resist keeping themselves off the collars.
The session has been postponed for an indefinite period of time.
While addressing a press conference, Maulana Ashrafi said that most of the participants were not in favour of discussing the agenda presented. He said that Maulana Sherani continued to discuss issues that have long been given verdicts on by the Holy Quran.
He said that Maulana Sherani got up and grabbed his collar. He said that which section or which article of the constitution permits a member of a national institution to behave aggressively in a meeting.
Maulana Ashrafi said that he would not have discussed the issue with anyone however, journalists present in the meeting broke the news.
He said that Maulana Sherani is neither eligible for CII’s chairmanship nor membership of the National Assembly. In March 13, 2013 he had offered his resignation to the Prime Miniser, he added. The alleged victimised cleric said that he had asked the Prime Minister to bring in those to run the affairs who know the religion.
While answering a question about allegations of prompting the assault, he offered to swear on the Holy Quran. Since the time Maulana Sherani took charge of the CII, agendas of meetings widened the issues instead of providing closure, he added.
On the other hand, statement issued by the council states that Maulana Tahir Ashrafi and Maulana Zahid Qasmi created a ruckus as the meeting began with the agenda. The statement further alleges the two of using foul language against the participants. Maulana Ashrafi started discussing matters which were not on the agenda.
