Steel Mills employees protest for non-payment of salaries

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Pakistan Steel Mills’ (PSM) irked employees on Thursday have once again resorted to demonstrations against the government and alleged faulty administration for pending salaries.

The protesters have gathered at the PSM’s main gate today.

Sources said that the administration body of the steel mills has not yet received payment worth Rs 2 billion which was given a go-ahead by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).

The employees have said that the demonstrations would continue until payment of the pending dues in full. The protesters have complained that they have not been given dues of past four months.

On the other hand, the steel mills losses have exceeded Rs 100 billion owing to poor administration and slackness of the governing body.

The steel factory eyes funds and aid from the government to pay its employees. The government has announced several packages in the past to help revive the structure however, it has been decided that the company will be privatized.

A Chinese company has shown interest in taking the wheel at the steel mills. However, the privatization process could take three to four years owing to the legal processes and shift of charge.
