Petitioner’s counsel Azhar Siddique stated in the petition that no government employee can contest elections within a period of two years after vacating the post.

Hassan had served in the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and contested the elections without complying with the requirement. The petition has requested the court to annul Hassan’s notification and reject nomination papers.

Earlier this week, another petition that challenged Hassan’s unopposed win was given a verdict in. The high court had upheld PML-N’s victory in the union council.

However, counsel for the defense had maintained that his client was appointed on honourary grounds and he had not taken any facilities from the government. He also nullified petitioner’s stance by saying that concerned returning officer (RO) was not made aware of the reservations.

Following completion of arguments from both the sides, the LHC threw the petition out and upheld Hassan’s unopposed win. The UC-107 Chairman is also a strong contender of the ruling party for Lord Mayorship in the local body (LB) polls.

Earlier in the first phase of LB polls, PML-N won the majority of seats in Punjab and while the Pakistan People s Party (PPP) secured most seats in Sindh. The Nawaz-led party shadowed competitors with 1,159 out of 2,696 UC seats. The independent canididates gained 997 seats in the first phase.
