The court ordered the government to chalk out routes for motorcycle rickshaws

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Thursday has ordered the Sindh government and rickshaw association to find common grounds after ban on illegal Qinqis in Karachi.

Justice Maqbool Bakar held hearing of the appeal that challenges Sindh High Court’s (SHC) verdict on rickshaws’ ban.

The SC ordered all stakeholders in the matter including Sindh government, rickshaw association, Transport Secretary to hold talks and resolve the issue. The court also ordered the parties to file a report on September 3.

Justice Bakar, in his remarks said that conditions of mini-buses is deteriorating. He said that there are hardly any taxis left in Karachi and the government has banned rickshaws also. The justice said that at least 5,000 families are suffering in the city. At least 25 lac people are devoid of transports due to the act, he added.

The court ordered the government to chalk out routes for motorcycle rickshaws. Sindh Assistant Advocate General objected saying that the ban is crucial to maintenance of safety and legal registrations.

If law enforcers cannot maintain a tight grip over law and order, would they impose ban? Justice Bakir posed a question.
