Deforestation in Karachi said to have played role in heat wave
A study highlights trees' significance in bring down temperature of an area
KARACHI (Dunya News) – Deforestation reportedly played a part in increased number of deaths due to heat wave this year.
Trees form a natural systematic apparatus to cleanse the environment. Water evaporated from leaves has a cooling affect adding to the shadows on ground. However, concrete buildings are eating up space for greenery.
According to international standards, at least 25 percent of a city must be reserved for trees and plantation. In contrast to that, Karachi has only six percent of green area.
A study highlights trees’ significance in bring down temperature of an area by several degrees. The district administration needs to take action in this regard and make appropriate changes.
Seeds and stems imported in Pakistan for plantation are mere causes of pollination and nothing else.
