PPP, PML-Q vow to uphold media freedom

Governor Punjab slammed the passage of resolution against media in the Assembly today. Talking to Dunya News, Salman said that free media is vital for the sustenance of democracy in the country. Earlier, in an unprecedented move, Punjab Assembly unanimously ratified a resolution, floored by PML-N member Sanaullah Masti Khel, against media on Friday (today). The motion carried the allegations that media organizations played vulgar Indian songs behind women MPAs footage. Interestingly, no assembly member opposed the said resolution. The assembly also denounced the programmes being aired on the MPAs. On the other hand, the media persons, sitting in the gallery, immediately left Punjab Assembly and boycotted the proceedings. Later, the journalists hold a peaceful demonstration outside the Assembly. The mediamen raised slogans against gagging of media when CM Shahbaz came out of the House, who left the venue sans talking to them. PML-N secretary information Ahsan Iqbal while talking to Dunya News said that all parties unanimously passed the resolution against media. He said that it is not their partys policy and the party believes in media freedom. PPP secretary information Fauzia Wahab said that PPP does not own it, and the party did not limit media freedom in its tenure. She said that PPP believes in independence of media. PML-Q leader Mushahid Hussain strongly condemned the resolution against media apporoved by the Punjab Assembly. He said that PML-Q will present a resolution against it. It is a very very wrong step taken by the PA, he added. PML-N respects media freedom: Shahbaz SharifAfter the approval of resolution against media, Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif said that PML-N respects media freedom. Talking to media in Lahore, Shahbaz Sharif said that freedom of opinion is a basic right of every individual and all factions of society are its guardian of media freedom. He said that media and democracy are interlinked. Without free and impartial media, democratic process cannot prosper, he added. Taseer rebuffs resolution against mediaGovernor Punjab Salman Taseer while condemning the resolution against media in the Punjab Assembly said that it should be reversed immediately. He said that medias sacrifices for restoration and consolidation of democracy cannot be ignored. He said that the resolution presented by PML-N member is a wrong step. He said that PPP believes in freedom of media and it raised voice for its freedom. PML-Q voted against resolution: Pervaiz Elahi PML-Qs senior leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said that his party voted against the resolution against media. He said that Chaudhry Zaherruddin opposed the resolution against the media, and added that PML-Q always stood by media and upheld its freedom. Resolution against PML-N policy towards media:Pervez Rasheed PML-N Pervez Rasheed, while talking to Dunya News said that the resolution against the media does not depict PML-N policy regarding media. He said that the resolution might be a brainchild of Sanaullah MastiKhel alone. He asserted that Nawaz League always stressed upon media freedom.
