Summary Collection of such funds is tantamount to fraud with public: LHC

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Lahore High Court (LHC) declared the surge in electricity tariff as illegal in a detailed decision on Monday. LHC stated that government should make arrangements to return the additional surcharge in a span of 3 months, reported Dunya News.

LHC had declared the decision to levy additional surcharge as illegal on Friday.

A 2-man-bench presided by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah has submitted a 39 page report on the matter after terming the whole affair as ‘worrisome’.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah said that no accountability is being done when government takes such decisions adding that government has not even mentioned why the additional surcharge had been levied.

The Court said that the collection of such funds and funneling it through different accounts is tantamount to fraud with public.

LHC termed such accumulation of funds by hiking surcharges as violation of basic rights of people adding that levying such surcharges as taxes is not permissible under NEPRA act.
